PAINT

Water-based paint is not toxic, but it is a major cause of water pollution. If it is completely dry, it can be put out with the household rubbish as it can no longer leak out of the container and spill into a stormwater drain.

You can dry out paint by mixing it with sand, cement, sawdust, plaster, kitty litter or a similar non-toxic dry base. Leave the lid off so that the mixture dries faster, and when the mixture has gone completely hard put it out with the household rubbish.

Schools can often use water-based paint for their art projects, and test pots are particularly popular! Please contact your local school to find out more.

BUT – this only works for water-based (acrylic) paint. Oil-based paint contains flammable solvents, and specialist paints such as marine paints or very old-lead-based paints are toxic. These types of paint must be taken to the shops listed below for special treatment. The HazMobile also accepts flammable and toxic paint.
